BIP39 Wordlists

What is BIP39?

BIP39 (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 39) is a standard originally created for generating deterministic cryptocurrency wallets from a mnemonic phrase. It defines a list of exactly 2048 words per language, carefully curated with the following properties:

  • Uniqueness: The first 4 characters of each word are unique within the list, reducing input errors.
  • Simplicity: Words are common, easy to pronounce, and easy to remember.
  • Multi-language: Official wordlists exist for several languages, enabling localized usage worldwide.

Why BGrid uses BIP39

BGrid divides the world into 2048 cells at each hierarchical level. This is not a coincidence — it maps perfectly to the BIP39 wordlist size. Each cell index (1–2048) corresponds directly to a word:

  • Index 1 → First word in the list (e.g., abandon in English)
  • Index 2048 → Last word in the list (e.g., zoo in English)

This means a BGrid address like [531, 1563, 1600] can be expressed as three simple words: ability-smoke-board.

Technical Details

  • Each wordlist contains exactly 2048 entries (indices 1 through 2048).
  • Words are stored as JSON arrays and loaded on demand.
  • The index-to-word mapping is deterministic: the same index always resolves to the same word in a given language.
  • BGrid addresses can be transmitted as either numeric indices or words — both representations are equivalent and losslessly convertible.
